Lamin-Lawino Ogwari Before the Well
Until recently, the village of Lamin-Lawino Ogwari in Omoro District suffered from a severe lack of clean water. Community members walked long distances to reach a shallow waterhole that they shared with livestock.
By the time families arrived, cows and goats were often standing in the pooled water, stirring up mud and waste. The water was visibly polluted, but it was the only source available for miles. Everyone—from small children to the elderly—knew the water was unsafe, yet there was no alternative.
Children frequently missed school to help collect water. Mothers spent hours each day queuing and carrying heavy containers. Stomach illnesses were constant, and over time, people became used to being sick from the water they drank.
What We Built in Lamin-Lawino Ogwari
Drop in the Bucket drilled a deep community borehole well and installed a standard hand pump with a reinforced concrete apron and upgraded stainless-steel riser pipes. The well was constructed in a central location to ensure safe and equitable access for households across the village.
This new borehole replaced the contaminated surface water source and provided a reliable supply of clean, safe water.
Lamin-Lawino Ogwari Now
Clean water is now available within the village for drinking, cooking, and daily hygiene. The water is clear, fresh, and safe to drink—no more competing with animals or collecting water from muddy ponds.
Reduced collection times allow children to stay in school and families to spend more time on farming, work, and caring for their households. Access to safe water has also reduced waterborne illness and improved overall health for approximately 300 people in the community.
Use & Upkeep
A Water User Committee oversees daily use and cleanliness of the borehole. Trained local hand pump technicians manage first-line repairs and coordinate with sub-county and district authorities when additional technical support is required.
