Before
The village relied on a dirty waterhole (locally known as an “unprotected well”). There were no boreholes in the area, so everyone in Nyapeya and the surrounding community was using similar unsafe water sources.
How Drop in the Bucket helped Awornyim Central
Drop in the Bucket drilled a 70-meter borehole and installed a community-standard hand pump with a reinforced concrete apron and stainless steel riser pipes. The site was selected for central, safe access and straightforward maintenance. Pump testing confirmed a sustainable yield of 3.06 m³ per hour. Drop in the Bucket also established a VSLA (Village Savings and Loan Association in Awornyim Central, so that the community will always have funds to cover repairs to the hand pump as they come up.
Awornyim Central Now
Clean water is now available within the village for drinking, cooking, and daily hygiene. Collection time is reduced, health risks from the waterhole are removed, and households have a predictable, nearby source.
Use & Upkeep
A local Water User Committee oversees daily use and cleanliness. First-line repairs are handled by trained hand pump technicians, with escalation to sub-county/district authorities as needed.
