Before the well the nearest source of clean water was 3 km away and it is was a regular well, but what the locals call a ‘protected spring’. A protected spring is a naturally occurring source of water around which a well or brick base has been built. The base makes it easier to get to the water, but this water is often groundwater which is frequently not as clean as water from a drilled well. The large number of students and the long distance they had to walk to the old water source made this a very high priority for Drop in the Bucket.
