Amononeno Primary School

The Amononeno Primary School is located in the Abako Sub-County of the Lira Dstrict of Uganda. The School is found in a very remote part of the District. The closest city, Lira is several hours away and the road conditions are quite poor on the route. The school has 1278 pupils which is made up of 659 boys and 619 girls. The school has 15 full time teachers and has been operating as a school since the 1960’s. The school has 402 orphans and 87 special needs children that are currently enrolled there.

Before the well the nearest source of clean water was 3 km away and it is was a regular well, but what the locals call a ‘protected spring’. A protected spring is a naturally occurring source of water around which a well or brick base has been built. The base makes it easier to get to the water, but this water is often groundwater which is frequently not as clean as water from a drilled well. The large number of students and the long distance they had to walk to the old water source made this a very high priority for Drop in the Bucket.
