Atelelo Primary School

Drop in the Bucket Africa water charity,
Atelelo Primary School Well completed wells,
Uganda Africa

The Atelelo Primary School is located in Angetta which is in the newly formed Abletong District. It was formerly part of the Lira District which was recently divided up into smaller Districts. The total enrollment is 587 pupils; 312 boys and 275 girls. There are 9 full-time teachers, 120 orphans and 30 special needs children.

Before the borehole well was completed the closest water source was 1.5 km, which was what is known locally as a protected spring. A protected spring is where the local people suspect that there is a naturally occurring source of water that is close to the surface of the ground, so they dig down a few feet to access this water. Once they have dug down they encase the spring with a cement base so that they can keep the area cleaner than if it was just mud. This is far from ideal and this water is often polluted or contaminated with parasites and bacteria.
