Gulu Central Secondary School Before the Well
Gulu Central Secondary School is located in Pece Division, one of the most densely populated areas of Gulu District in northern Uganda. Before the borehole was drilled, the school did not have a reliable source of clean water on campus to support its students and staff.
Without safe water available on-site, students were forced to rely on limited and unreliable alternatives. This made it difficult to maintain basic hygiene, increased health risks, and disrupted the school day—especially during dry periods when water scarcity was more severe.
What We Built at Gulu Central Secondary School
Drop in the Bucket drilled a borehole well on the school grounds and installed a standard hand pump with a reinforced concrete apron and upgraded stainless-steel riser pipes. The well was drilled to a depth of 60 meters to ensure access to a reliable groundwater source.
Providing clean water directly at the school supports drinking water needs, hygiene practices, and a healthier learning environment for both students and staff.
Gulu Central Secondary School Now
With clean water now available on campus, students can drink safely and practice proper hygiene throughout the school day. Reliable access to water reduces illness-related absences and allows teachers and administrators to focus more fully on education rather than water shortages.
For a secondary school serving hundreds of students, having a dependable water source is essential to keeping learners healthy, present, and engaged.
Use & Upkeep
School leadership oversees daily use and cleanliness of the borehole. Routine maintenance and first-line repairs are managed locally, with additional technical support coordinated through sub-county and district authorities when required.
