Kayembe-Mirembe is located close to Mbale, Uganda. The area is known for its ranges of large rocks. In fact the area is close to Mount Elgon and sits on dense rock. This makes drilling challenging and because of these difficulties, the area has few wells. The people who live in this community used to have to walk long distances to look for water every day.
Because of the long walk to water, the area was particularly dangerous for women walking alone after dark. The risk is amplified by the fact that the area has a dramatically higher rate of HIV/AIDS than other parts of Uganda.
Not only will the new well provide clean water, it will also make the area safer for local women as they are no longer walking such long distances through areas and are now able to stay in the more densely populated areas.
