Lira Secondary School

In January 2008, Drop in the Bucket visited Lira Secondary School in Lira, Uganda. We had been recommended to the school by the local district water officer, who said it was a well run school, but it urgently needed clean water and toilets. As soon as we met the school staff, we knew it was a good fit for a well and our septic system. The well was drilled in February and the toilets were completed in March 2008.

Drop in the Bucket does not normally install our roundabout pumps at secondary schools, but in this particular area, we noticed a lot of primary age children playing near the school grounds, so we knew that the pump would have enough children playing on it, to provide the school with plenty of clean water.

Drop in the Bucket periodically check up on all of our projects and while visiting this well a couple of years later, we realized that the children we had previously seen we IDP (Internally displaced person from the war)  but over time families started to going back to their villages and there were less children playing on the roundabout. So we ended up removing the roundabout pump and replacing it with a solar pump in 2011.
