Nawangisa Primary School

Nawangisa Primary School (Buliganwa, Nabitende) — Borehole Well

Project Snapshot

  • Location: Buliganwa village, Nabitende Sub-county, Iganga District, Uganda
  • School: Nawangisa Primary School
  • Learners Served: 381 (194 girls, 187 boys) + teachers/staff
  • Intervention: Drilled borehole well with durable hand pump, concrete apron, and drainage
  • Status: Completed

Before

The school relied on two options. One was a crowded community well with long queues. This caused the children to wait long periods of time for water and resulted in them missing school.

The other option was a shallow waterhole in a swamp about 1 km from the school. The path was overgrown and unsafe, especially for girls. The water itself was polluted and unsafe to drink.

What We Built

Drop in the Bucket drilled a deep borehole for the school and installed an India mk ii hand pump with a reinforced concrete apron and upgraded stainless steel riser pipes. The site was selected for safe access during busy school hours and ease of maintenance.

After

Clean water is now available at the school for drinking, handwashing, cooking, and routine cleaning. Learners spend less time away from lessons, and the need to walk to the swamp is removed.

Use & Upkeep

The school administration oversees daily use and basic maintenance. For repairs beyond routine care, the school coordinates with local hand pump technicians and district authorities.
