Owak Central Community Before the Well

Owak Central Community is located in Owak Agonga, Gulu District, northern Uganda. Before the borehole was drilled, safe water was not available within the community, and households relied on distant and often unsafe water sources to meet their daily needs.

Women and children spent long hours collecting water, and during dry seasons these challenges became more severe. Limited access to clean water increased health risks and reduced the time available for education, work, and household responsibilities.

What We Built in Owak Central Community

Drop in the Bucket drilled a community borehole well and installed a standard hand pump with a reinforced concrete apron and upgraded stainless-steel riser pipes. The site was selected to provide safe, central access for households across Owak Central Community.

The new borehole ensures a reliable source of clean water close to home for community members.

Owak Central Community Now

Clean water is now available within the community for drinking, cooking, and daily hygiene. Reduced water collection times allow families to focus more on education, farming, and caring for their households.

Reliable access to safe water also helps reduce waterborne illness and supports healthier living conditions for approximately 500 people in the community.

Use & Upkeep

A Water User Committee oversees daily use and cleanliness of the borehole. Trained local hand pump technicians manage first-line repairs and coordinate with sub-county and district authorities when additional technical support is required.
