Paibona SEED Secondary School Brings Education Closer to Home

Paibona SEED Secondary School is a new day school serving families in Paibona Sub-county, Gulu District, in the Acholi sub-region of northern Uganda. The nearest major city is Gulu, which is unfortunately not close enough to be a viable option for the children’s education needs. A local secondary school was needed so that secondary age students could complete their education.

What Is a SEED Secondary School?

SEED stands for Secondary Education Expansion and Development. These government-backed schools are placed in sub-counties with no public secondary schools. The goal is simple: make secondary education to all children once they have graduated primary school.

Uganda has thousands of primary schools, but far fewer secondary schools. SEED schools help close that gap by adding safe, fully furnished day schools in underserved areas and by supporting girls’ education and inclusive learning.

Where is Paibona, Gulu District?

Paibona is a rural sub-county in Gulu District, part of the Acholi sub-region. Families here have long relied on schools far from home, which adds cost, time, and safety concerns—especially for girls. Placing a secondary school in Paibona reduces travel and keeps learners connected to their families and community.

The new school also strengthens the wider education network in northern Uganda by easing pressure on crowded schools closer to Gulu City.

What a Local Secondary School Changes in Paibona

A nearby day school means fewer long commutes and more time in class. Attendance improves, drop-out risk falls, and parents can stay involved. Girls benefit from safer, shorter journeys and a better chance to stay in school through Senior 1 to Senior 4.

SEED schools are designed as practical campuses—classrooms, lab space, and staff areas—so teaching can focus on learning outcomes, not logistics. A local school also becomes a hub for youth activities and community events.

The New well at Paibona SEED Secondary School

Drop in the Bucket, was asked by the school district to provide a well for the Paibona SEED Secondary School. This was a project perfectly suited for our work as it aligns with our mission to use clean water to provide access to education for schools across sub-Saharan Africa. Reliable water, sanitation, and hygiene help students stay healthy and in class. If you’re new here, explore our water facts to see how safe water supports learning across Uganda. We’re a clean water charity that believes every child deserves a fair shot at school.

Looking Ahead for Paibona SEED Secondary School and the entire community

Paibona SEED Secondary School is a step toward equal access to education in northern Uganda. As the school grows, we expect better transition rates from primary to secondary, stronger results for girls, and a community that keeps investing in its young people.
