Struggling for Clean Water in Pudyek Village
Pudyek Village, located in the Laroo-Pece Division of the Gulu District in Uganda, is a densely populated area on the outskirts of the city. While other parts of Gulu town have access to piped water, the infrastructure has not yet reached this community. Without a reliable source of clean water, residents were left with no choice but to fetch water from a nearby waterhole. Unfortunately, this water was neither clean nor safe for drinking, putting families at constant risk of waterborne diseases.
For years, daily life in Pudyek was shaped by the struggle to access water. The long walks to collect water took time away from school and work, and the health risks associated with consuming contaminated water were a constant concern. The need for a well in the village was urgent.
Drilling a Well: A Life-Changing Moment
In May of 2022, Drop in the Bucket’s drilling team arrived in Pudyek Village, equipped with a hydrogeological survey that showed promising signs of water underground. After just one afternoon of drilling, our team reached the aquifer at a depth of 52 meters. The well was successfully installed, bringing clean, safe water to the village for the first time.
The impact was immediate. Families no longer had to rely on the unsafe waterhole, and access to clean water meant a dramatic improvement in health and quality of life. The well is not only reducing waterborne illnesses it is also residents back valuable time that was previously being spent collecting water.
A Sustainable Future for Pudyek
With clean water now available within the community, Pudyek Village has taken a major step toward a healthier, more sustainable future. Children can attend school without the daily burden of fetching water, and families can focus on building a better life. This well is more than just a source of water—it is a foundation for progress, health, and opportunity.
