Twon Okun: Where the Cleanest Water Came from a Rusted Pipe
A Village in Need of Water
Twon Okun is a village with a population of 1,500, located just 5km from Gulu town in Uganda. Despite its proximity to town, the village had been struggling with a lack of clean water, causing significant challenges for its residents. The primary source of income for the locals is brick-making, but without water, all production comes to a halt. Every dry season, this issue would bring the local economy to a standstill, leaving families without an income for months at a time.

The high demand for water put immense pressure on the only available source—a naturally occurring spring with a rusted pipe attached. This pipe, worn out and covered in rust, would often fail to provide water, and when it did, the water was frequently unsafe to drink.
A Critical Intervention
When local officials approached Drop in the Bucket to provide a well in the area, we were initially surprised by the request, considering the close proximity to town. However, after witnessing the situation firsthand, we knew we had to take action. Our team promptly sent a surveyor to assess the village, who confirmed the potential for water at approximately 30 meters. Determined to ensure a sustainable solution, even during the driest seasons, we continued drilling beyond that depth.
After reaching a depth of 50 meters, we installed casing and a hand pump, marking the birth of a new well for Twon Okun. The well has been performing exceptionally well, with a yield of 1.9 cubic meters per hour. This ample supply of clean water ensures that even during the busiest times in the village, there will always be enough for everyone.
Twon Okun: A Community Transformed

The impact of this well on the lives of the Twon Okun community cannot be overstated. The villagers no longer face the distressing uncertainty of water scarcity, and their brick-making industry can now thrive consistently throughout the year. This newfound stability has not only improved their economic prospects but also enhanced their overall well-being and quality of life.
With clean water now readily available, the people of Twon Okun can focus on their future with confidence. The village no longer has to rely on an unreliable, rusted pipe for water, and the transformation has been life-changing.
