Every woman deserves the opportunity to live a healthy, dignified life. In South Sudan, many girls and women face barriers that prevent them from completing their education, accessing healthcare, and building secure futures. Through our Women's Health Program, Drop in the Bucket provides practical support, education, and resources that empower girls and women at every stage of life. Working alongside schools, communities, and local health partners, we help girls stay in school, support young and expectant mothers, and strengthen the healthcare services families depend on. Together, these programs improve health, restore opportunity, and build stronger communities.

Menstrual Hygiene Management

Health Support That Keeps Girls in School

For many girls in South Sudan, a lack of menstrual products can mean missing school every month or leaving school altogether. Drop in the Bucket's Menstrual Hygiene Management Program helps ensure that menstruation is never a barrier to education.

Each year, we provide more than 2,000 girls attending the eleven primary schools of Nimule Central Boma with reusable menstrual pads, underwear, soap, and menstrual health education. Girls learn about puberty, reproductive health, and proper menstrual hygiene in a safe and supportive environment, giving them the confidence to stay healthy, remain in school, and pursue their education with dignity.

Support for Young Mothers

Helping Young Mothers Return to School

Many young women in South Sudan leave school because of early pregnancy or child marriage, often through circumstances beyond their control. Without support, they face limited opportunities to continue their education, earn an income, or build secure futures for themselves and their children.

Our Young Mothers Program provides a safe, supportive community where participants continue learning while building practical skills for the future. Young mothers receive adult and financial literacy classes, life skills training, parenting support, and vocational training. They also participate in community gardening projects, learning sustainable agriculture while growing nutritious food for their families. By combining education, practical skills, and peer support, the program helps young mothers regain confidence, achieve greater independence, and create brighter futures for themselves and their children.

KNOWLEDGE AND CONFIDENCE

Creating Safe Places for Girls to Learn and Grow

DROP’s Safe Spaces give girls a welcoming place to continue learning after the school day ends and during school holidays. Led by teachers and mentors who are former graduates of our program, the sessions combine academic support with practical health information, personal guidance, and opportunities for girls to speak openly about the challenges they face.

Girls can ask questions they may not feel comfortable raising elsewhere, build supportive friendships, and receive encouragement from adults they trust. The program helps them better understand their health, build confidence, and make more informed decisions about their futures.

By creating a consistent network of support around each student, Safe Spaces help girls remain engaged in learning and recognize that their voices, ambitions, and well-being matter.

Support for Expectant Mothers

Supporting Mothers Through Pregnancy and Childbirth

Healthy pregnancies begin with knowledge, preparation, and access to essential care. Our Expectant Mothers Program helps women navigate pregnancy with confidence by combining health education with practical support.

Expectant mothers participate in workshops covering prenatal care, nutrition, newborn care, breastfeeding, hygiene, and recognizing danger signs during pregnancy. Upon completing the program, each participant receives a Mama Kit filled with essential supplies needed for a safer delivery and the first days of caring for a newborn. These simple interventions help improve maternal and infant health while encouraging mothers to seek skilled healthcare throughout pregnancy and childbirth.

HEALTHCARE SUPPORT

Partnering with Nimule Hospital

Drop in the Bucket works in close partnership with Nimule Hospital to improve maternal and community health throughout the Nimule region. Hospital staff help lead our Expectant Mothers workshops, while our Mama Kit program encourages mothers to seek skilled prenatal care and deliver safely at local health facilities.

Beyond maternal health, we collaborate with the hospital's community health workers to deliver health education and disease prevention messages throughout surrounding communities. During public health emergencies, including cholera outbreaks and Ebola preparedness efforts, Drop in the Bucket has provided personal protective equipment (PPE), infection prevention supplies, and other essential resources while working alongside local health authorities to strengthen community preparedness and response.

Women's Health Programs Led by Local Expertise

Lasting improvements in women's health depend on strong communication, local knowledge, and trusted local voices. Working with community health leaders and employing graduates from our own program as mentors is part of our long-term commitment to the communities we serve.

Our health officers, educators, and mentors live and work in South Sudan. They understand the challenges girls and women face because they are part of the communities themselves. By working alongside teachers, parents, healthcare providers, and local leaders, they build the relationships and trust that make lasting change possible.

We believe the strongest programs are those led by the communities they are designed to serve. By investing in local leadership, we are helping ensure that girls and women continue to receive the knowledge, support, and opportunities they need to lead healthier lives.

THE FUTURE

Healthy Girls Build Stronger Communities

Good health gives girls the opportunity to stay in school and build brighter futures for themselves and their families. When girls have access to health education, real support, and the care they need, they are better equipped to overcome challenges and reach their full potential.

Through programs that support menstrual health, provide guidance through Safe Spaces, assist young mothers in returning to school, and strengthen local healthcare services, Drop in the Bucket is helping create healthier communities where girls can learn, lead, and thrive. We believe that investing in the health and well-being of girls today helps build stronger families, more resilient communities, and a brighter future for South Sudan.
